Violent protests have now rocked Charlotte, North Carolina, for two straight nights following the Tuesday shooting death of Keith Lamont Scott by police.
While Tuesday’s protests resulted in injuries to over a dozen police officers, Wednesday’s protests saw police tear gas fired into crowds as protesters threw rocks and firecrackers back at authorities.
One man was shot during Wednesday night’s protest and was last reported in critical condition. Later, North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory declared a state of emergency in the city.
The 43-year-old Scott died after police shot him while looking for another person. Police claim that he had a gun, while his family says that he was disabled, unarmed and only holding a book when police told him to get out of his car.
